Special Education Services
Public Schools
As part of the Local Plan, the SELPA determines where the public school special education services will be located. These services are all provided at no cost to families, as determined by the IEP team and are available to all students residing within the SELPA, according to the interdistrict charts:
Private Schools
Students enrolled in private schools have a right to a special education assessment at no cost by the district of resident. If the student is found eligible for special education, an IEP will be developed. If the family continues to enroll the student in a the private school, the IEP will not be implemented.
Each school district determines how and what services will be provided to students enrolled in private schools. The responsibility to provide services is relatively small. An Individual Service Plan (ISP) will be developed, according to district guidelines. Families have very limited rights in disputing the ISP.
Nonpublic Schools (NPS)
Rarely, an IEP team will decide that a student cannot get his/her educational needs met on a public school campus. In this case, a nonpublic school may be selected.
Nonpublic Schools are private schools which are certified by the California Department of Education to provide services to special education students, using local public district funds.
