Behavioral Interventions
The term behavioral interventions is used to describe certain ways of teaching students skills needed in the school setting. These may include academic, language, social/emotional or functional life skills, among others.
On this website, the term Applied Behavior Analysis is used when discussing interventions to teach students new skills, or skills that they need to use better and more efficiently.
When discussing interventions to change student behaviors which are not desired in the school setting, the term Positive Behavior Supports is used.
Some students demonstrate behaviors which put them at risk for disciplinary action. Click on Suspension and Expulsion. The Ventura County SELPA offers a process in which Special Education teachers can become verified as having expertise in the tenets of Applied Behavior Analysis, both for changing non-desired behvaiors as well as teaching new skills and behaviors. Click here for a copy of the handbook which describes the process.
